This relief represents Dionysos. His name, meaning “God in Man”, was also known as Bacchus in Rome, god of wine and the mystic deliriums. On his head, he is wearing one of his most characteristic attributes, grapes and grape leaves. In old Greece, Dionysos was celebrated with processions evoking, by means of masks, the genies of the earth and fertility. These celebrations were the origin of the most typical representations of theatre - comedy, tragedy, and satirical drama. In Rome, his cult degenerated into hedonistic rites.
